Aim:
Contribute to the acts of prevention among the youths through education at school

Method / Issue:
Thanks to the last world AIDS day, two community organizations organized a competition towards the pupils of twenty secondary schools in the city of Bobo Dioulasso (BURKINA FASO), in order to assess the knowledge of STDS/HIV/AIDS of the youths at school. The competition has regrouped two hundred pupils selected among twenty secondary schools (10 pupils per school). It was organized in collaboration with the administrative authorities and the responsible of education and it took place on December 12th 2006 in one secondary school of the city. The pupils had to treat a test based on the topic of STDS/HIV/AIDS. They had to answer 20 questions about the ways of transmission, the HIV virus, the importance of testing and some institutions which deal with HIV/AIDS. They were marked by a quote of 20.

Results / Comments:
The correctors remarked that the marks were fair on the whole and some pupils even got marks beyond 15 by 20. A week later (December 19th 2006) the both organizations organized a ceremony in order to reward the best competitors. This ceremony was under the sponsorship of the high authorities of the administration and education. It was covered by the television what permitted a wide visibility and subsequently contribute to the promotion of the prevention. The first twenty pupils were awarded. We could notice throughout that competition that the youths are informed and interested of anything that is bounded to STDS/HIV/AIDS and furthermore to the sexual health. Indeed the authorities in charge of education have included in their programs, the education about STDS/HIV/AIDS at school. What explains the fact that some pupils seemed to be really well informed about the subject, and it shows the truly interest that the in-school young people have to it. Simultaneously to the competition a wide campaign of counselling and testing was undertaken. We notice that a lot of youths, precisely the pupils came to be tested.

Discussion:
After that competition we noticed that the youth at school are in need of information and knowledge about the scourge of HIV/AIDS and they showed a real interest to it. It is very important for everyone to consider the main role of education in the prevention of STDS/HIV/AIDS among that vulnerable and exposed stratum of the active society, knowing that our African families speaking about sex and HIV/AIDS to the young people is still taboo. Then we will launch an appeal to the political authorities to stress the educational programs on STDS/HIV/AIDS considering that our families are still not completely committed in the fight against this plague through the education of youths. Moreover, the responsible of education (teachers, monitors, etc.) have to efficiently play their role, considering that they are to take over from the parents in the education of youths.
