Aim:
Sao Paulo State has had the largest number of pediatric AIDS cases in Brazil. Since 1996, Sao Paulo (and Brazil nationally) has implemented an aggressive program to reduce perinatal transmission; we gathered available indicators to examine the programs impact.

Method / Issue:
: We obtained data on reported AIDS cases from the AIDS surveillance system. Data on number of mother/infant pairs treated with AZT from the state logistics office that distributes HIV medication. Rates of perinatal transmission were from a multisite study of the Brazilian Pediatric Society that included various services in So Paulo State. Years for which data were available varied by indicator.

Results / Comments:
Reported cases of AIDS due to perinatal transmission fell from 372 to 105 from 1996 to 2005. The number of cases treated with AZT (ACTG 076) increased from 784 to 2318 from 1997 to 2005. The rate of perinatal transmission for babies born to HIV+ mothers fell from 16% in 1996 to 2,7% in 2002.

Discussion:
Both process and outcome data based on various indicators demonstrate the effectiveness of efforts to reduce perinatal transmission in So Paulo State. We recommend similar efforts in other place with substantial perinatal transmission of HIV.
