Aim:
Study objectives: The International Organization for Migration is conducting a project, funded by the Italian Ministry of Health, aimed at assessing HIV-AIDS prevention material with/on a selected migrant population, in order to elaborate (optimal) preventive measures which can effectively reach foreign citizens. It were selected Albanians, Moroccans, Peruvians representing the three relevant geographic areas (East Europe, North Africa, Latina America) more represented in Italy

Method / Issue:
Methods The target groups to be interviewed have been selected according to immigrants association and through community leaders recommendations. An exploratory qualitative study is being implemented on the responsiveness of Albanians, Moroccans and Peruvians immigrants living in Italy about HIV/AIDS prevention materials. Anthropological techniques, in particular semistructured interviews and focus groups, and participatory approaches are used. HIV prevention campaigns conducted in Italy but also in Albania, Morocco and Per will be collected. During focus group discussion, through experiential learning approaches, participants will review preventive materials, provide comments on it and suggest optimal strategies able to reach their specific population. Questions will tend to bring out reasons for liking and disliking displayed material and suggestions for the creation of new information material. The material will be assessed in relation to: favourite slogans, colours, background, format, content, approach.

Results / Comments:
Results The most relevant campaigns produced in Italy and in countries of origin of Albanians, Moroccans, Peruvians will be collected and evaluated. The results of the project will be the elaboration of a communication strategy, indicators (and related languages) to vehicle HIV/AIDS preventive messages among Albanian, Moroccans and Peruvians. Brief guidelines on useful strategies for directing prevention messages on Albanians, Moroccans and Peruvians population and samples of effective ad hoc HIV/AIDS prevention materials will be elaborated. Final results of the project will be presented at the conference.

Discussion:
Discussion In Italy the proportion of diagnoses of AIDS among immigrants has increased in the latest years. Italian instruments and strategies for HIV prevention have been elaborated for and applied on the local/autochthon population. In order to develop an integrated preventive action, there is the need to include determinants that respect traditions and cultures of all individuals. At the present there is no information on the impact of prevention campaign carried out in Italy on migrants. This program aims to provide indictors on effectiveness of HIV prevention messages for the realisation of campaigns able to reach migrant population. Evidence based strategies regarding integrated and structured interventions on health prevention for migrants in Italy will be studies and elaborated. The project outcomes will support the development of an evidence-based plan of prevention within the Italian National Health Strategy for 2006-2009 integrated with indicators respectful of cultural diversity.
