Aim:
TASO Mulago has a cumulative number of 28,000 registered clients, all living with HIV/AIDS. Over 2000 clients and their families have benefited from food aid under UN World Food Programme and USAID Title II project in the last 5 years. This called for an evaluation study on the effectiveness of the food in collaboration with Ministry of Health, TASO, United Nations World Food Programme, and IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency). This abstract outlines experience and lessons learnt in mobilizing PLWAs for the evaluation study.

Method / Issue:
Participants for the evaluation study are identified from food aid beneficiaries identified using a poverty / food security assessment tool. Community counselors and research assistants are involved in mobilization of study participants in the community, anthropometric measures notably BMI are taken in addition to CD4 count and used in screening study participants following mobilization exercise. Food aid is given after recruitment of eligible study participants and ratio was 2.5:1.5:1. Participants for the study are mobilized at outreaches and in the community by community AIDS volunteer workers with support of a community Counselor.

Results / Comments:
X It is important to map clients home addresses and determine cut off distances. X Due to poverty, research study participants in resource limited settings require transport facilitation for them to fulfill the given appointments for research visits. X Regular communication and study participants updates assist the study participants to internalize information to dispel misconceptions. X Stigma associated to HIV/AIDS affects participation. X Community based research assistants / community volunteers are a ready community resource in client mobilization. X Sensitization of community members assists in the study mobilization.
