Aim:
The aim of investigation was improvement of monitoring's system of prevention of HIV-1 mother to child transmission (MTCT) in Russia.

Method / Issue:
With the help of the specially elaborated computer programme, there was created the register about 10210 cases of children born by HIV-infected mothers in 20 subjects of Russian Federation for the period of 1990-2005, and the information about MTCT was analysed in accordance with the official statistic forms.

Results / Comments:
It was established, that the number of HIV- infected pregnant women and children, born by them, who received the full three-step course of antiretroviral prophylaxis according to different schemes, increased from 13,8% in 2000 to 60,2% in 2005, and the number of persons who did not receive any antiretroviral prophylactic treatment reduced from 63,2% in 2000 to 5,8% in 2005. There was marked the increasing frequency of the Caesarean birth operations use for HIV-infected womens delivery from 6,9% in 2000 to 15,9% in 2005. At the same time, the HIV-infected women began to give their new-born babies breast more seldom: 22,1% in 2000 and 2,5% in 2005. the frequency of vertical HIV-transmission, in accordance with the results of the examination of children born by HIV-infected mothers, reduced from 27,8% in 2000 to 8,9% in 2003.

Discussion:
The index of the frequency of vertical HIV transmission in 20 subjects of Russian Federation, calculated according to the WHO/UNAIDS methods, reduced from 18,0% in 2001 to 10,3% in 2005 (by 42,8%), which is obviously connected with the improvement of carrying out chemical prophylaxis of MTCT. The pointed out lowering of vertical HIV transmission frequency testifies the realization of the Declaration on adherence. Thus, a certain progress is made in the prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission in Russia, though the monitoring system of MTCT needs specification and modernization.
