Aim:
Increase knowledge of STDs/HIV/AIDS prevention among recruits Increase male involvement in the fight against HIV/AIDS Reduce risky behaviours among recruits

Method / Issue:
Issues; The project targeted military recruits because they are youth(18-23) years. Over 50% of the population of Uganda is below the age of 23 .Since recruits come from all corners of the country, they would be sources of accurate information on STDs/HIV/AIDS prevention to their communities when they go back; thus a powerful multiplier effect on prevention.

Results / Comments:
The project was to enable recruits in 10 selected units gain knowledge and skills on STDs/HIV/AIDS prevention using peer education services. A sentisation workshop for senior officers was conducted; a needs assessment for recruits was carried out;1200 peer educatorsand 50 trainers were trained. Topics included; reproduction, family planning,STDs/HIV/AIDS;communication

Discussion:
Lessons Learnt;Peer education can be an effective and popular method of STDS/HIV/AIDS prevention in a big population and involving key decision makers from the start is paramount in implementing projects in autocratic and closed institutions. NB.I need a scholarship to facilitate my attendance
