Background
STD clinics are an important venue for HIV prevention. First, a significant proportion of HIV infections are first diagnosed in the STD clinic setting. Recent innovations in HIV testing and administration of the test, including HIV rapid testing, opt-out testing, the de-tuned assay, and RNA testing of pooled specimens, have had significant impact on the uptake of testing, communication of test results, and the identification of recent infections in this setting. Second, significant numbers of HIV-infected persons who are known to be HIV-infected frequent STD clinics and are at disproportionate risk of being diagnosed with syphilis, gonorrhea, and other sexually transmitted infections that indicate a high risk for ongoing HIV transmission. Innovations are underway in many clinics to better serve persons with both recent and long-standing infections to (re-)link them to care and prevention services and thus prevent the ongoing spread of HIV infection. Besides the uptake of testing innovations listed above, intensive linkage to care case management programs play a central part in the current evolution of HIV prevention in the STD clinic setting. The purpose of this workshop is to update participants on new HIV testing technology, its implications in the STD clinic setting, practical integration of behavioral interventions in the STD clinic settings, and the development of linkage to care programs.
