Aim:
To prevent HIV/AIDS infection close to institutionalised young people; To promote the development of personal and social skills; To develop skills of autonomy, assertiveness, decision-making, self-esteem and risk evaluation.

Method / Issue:
Since 1993, FPCCSIDA works closely with Portuguese society and intervenes near youngsters through its Youth Guidance and Orientation Centre (YGOC). This Centres objectives are to promote Health and Sexual Education investing in training young people using the Peer Education strategy in the development of personal and social skills in the area of sexuality and HIV/AIDS prevention and drug addiction. The Project we are presenting is the result of YGOC in Olivais Educational Centre OEC, in Coimbra. OECs youngsters are in this Institution because they have committed a crime and now they are being temporary separated from their environment and educated using specific pedagogic programmes. The methodology adopted by this Project, investigation/action, involved in all of its process the former team and OEC youngsters. Facing a problem diverging behaviours of the studied population becoming vulnerable to adopt little healthy lifestyles, there was a need to find solutions involving several interveners, in order to change attitudes/risk behaviours. This intervention included the approach of the subjects of the referred areas, using diversified methodologies that involved group dynamics, construction of games and theatre-debate.

Results / Comments:
The Project was evaluated throughout its development, through observation and participation of the former team close to the study-population, using questionnaires and interviews to youngsters, monitors and the people in charge of this Institution. The result of the intervention was a game made by these youngsters called Life Domino about HIV means of infection, and it was used in posterior training sessions. The evaluation showed behaviour changes, autonomy, better self-esteem, self confidence and a better relationship with peers, their training team and other adults in OEC.

Discussion:
According UNAIDS (2004), projects that provide (in)formation, motivate young people to reduce risk behaviours, increasing the use of condoms and safer sexual practices, encouraging healthy behaviours, fortifying their resistance to negative pressures and reducing harmful behaviours. In result of OECs work, we expect that in the future the participants of this training programme, when contacting with the different contexts of society, can have assertive behaviours and that themselves can intervene in campaigns to prevent HIV/AIDS.
