Aim:
In 1997 the National Health Service of Costa Rica began distribution of HAART. The San Juan de Dios Hospital started with 750 patients, integral interventions which have resulted in a 91% rate of therapeutic success. This abstract resumes the experiences of socio educational groups addresses to people living with HIV with HAART and their social networks, which are implemented for social workers since 1998
 
Method / Issue:
The group method has become a fundamental tool for increasing adherence through the inclusion of different support networks. It is focus in human rights. This program trains the PLWA and their social networks in various aspects : general and psychosocial aspects of HIV, treatment of HIV including HAART, and strategies for the improvement of both adherence and the utility of support networks. Groups are close and composed of approximately 25 participants, who participate in four two hour session . It has a psycho-educational component, integrating cognitive aspects as a means to guarantee the adequate processing of information. Due to the characteristics of the population addressed, the educational methodology requires general terminology and common-language explanations.
 
Results / Comments:
Trough this methodology it was possible to debunk HIV and HAART myths. Support networks indicate greater support. The adherence profile has been improved. People with high social vulnerability have been identified. Peer-socialization has been shown to be highly effective
 
Discussion:
The design and implementation of therapeutic and educational processes are necessary It is suitable and advisable to combine therapeutic and educational models so the results can be sustainable and effective Socio educational groups can be the base for the patients' selection for therapeutic processes Socio educational is an ideal strategy to guarantee adherence for people living with HIV/aids and to give effective support , and represents the first step inside the process of empowerment The success of HAART has presented new challenges related to quality of life of people living with HIV.
