Issues Implementing the use of modern technology to fast track treatment and management of HIV and AIDS related illness may help manage this chronic disease if implemented carefully and correctly.

Results / Comments:
Project description The shortage of specialists services in remote/rural health care settings such as teledermatology, radiography, and gynecology is a major challenge in South Africa. Continued efforts to fight HIV and AIDS should include the use of ICTs in remote health care delivery including addressing psycho social issues like the associated gaps between the doctor and patient relationship. Based on some of the initiatives implemented in South Afirca various lessons have been learnt by the South African Medical Research Council whose mandate includes investigating the effectiveness of telemedicine in the country. Some of the lessons learned from various projects can inform how acceptable the implementation of the technology is among its users.

Discussion:
Lessons Learned A carefully planned and implemented project will improve practices in implementing modern technology in a rural health care setting in the management of HIV and AIDS. Secondly, it will also improve a more technologyfriendly process of consultation, confidence and satisfaction of the new technology among the rural population. The important aspects to be considered include: Readiness for implementation Required training Information needs assessment Information seeking behavior assessment Patient readiness Patent/health care provider relationships Privacy Cultural sensitivity Public, private partnership relationships management and Literature review of existing best practice models.
