Aim:
To explore reasons why male and female youths do not basically accept voluntary counselling and testing for HIV/AIDS in Uganda

Method / Issue:
Focus group discussions, interpersonal communication, individual and group counselling sessions, questionares, site visits to disco places, drinking clubs, school youth clubs and home visits. A sample of 300 youths were followed using the above methods for 2 years June 2004 to June 2006

Results / Comments:
At the end of the study, it was evident that the following factors hinder VCT among female and male youths in uganda. (a) Lack of access to tailor made counselling proggrammes (b) Poverty, hindering consistent attendance of counselling and testing services (c) Assumed social rejection in case of possible results due to ignorance (d) Alcohol and drug addiction (e) Idleness, leading to disorderliness (f) Execessive love feelings towards sex partners, leading to boy cot of VCT proggrammes

Discussion:
Adult literacy proggrammes should be encouraged to reduce acute ignorance of HIV/AIDS and STDs. The youth should be given counselling services that are youth friendly. There is need for empowerment and facilitation for the youth in order to engage in income generating projects that reduce poverty
