  Additional Authors:  Mr John Miller,
Aim:
This workshops aim is to build skills of participants that will enable them to be active and useful participants in the International AIDS Conference. Our target audience is professionals, scientists, activists, & community leaders considering attending XVII International AIDS Conferences.

Method / Issue:
It first helps participants understand the purposes of a conference abstract to get accepted as a conference presenter and to entice conference delegates to hear the presenter. To do that, participants in this workshop must learn to take the content of the abstract beyond a simple description of their work or their research. The workshop will help participants to identify what aspects of their work are interesting enough to present to conference participants. It helps people think of a presentation that would a) be interesting to ones smartest and most-informed peers, and b) promote learning and advance the discussions and debates in the field. It helps programme managers to comment critically on their own programmes, and helps scientists to draw links or conclusions that are relevant to peers in other settings or cultures.

Results / Comments:
Training materials include: 1) A toolkit on writing effective conference abstracts and making effective presentations 2) A worksheet to help participants identify the aspects of their topic that is new and interesting 3) Explanations of common abstract headings, and what conference organizers expect to read in those parts of the abstract 4) Checklists participants can use to ensure they have thought of all the important ideas, and have followed all steps 5) Workshop evaluation form.
