  Aim:
Vision 2016, A Long term Vision for Botswana (1997) identifies as a challenge the need to halt and reverse the rising incidence of HIV infections amongst young people. The National Strategic Framework for Botswana (2003-2009:17) identifies the youth and children as needing the most protection and guidance if the nation is to achieve the vision of no new infections by 2016. HIV/AIDS prevention strategies therefore should target knowledge gaps in order to address specific needs of children and youth. The paper aims at exploring what the church going adolescents aged 10-14 understand sexual abstinence to mean. Data collected through journaling and focus group discussions will be analyzed to determine their understanding. The findings will assist in developing appropriate preventive and promotive intervention strategies in line with their understanding and needs.
