Aim:
Describing ARV treatment compliance among adolescents who know their HIV status

Method / Issue:
Adolescents have been identified in 5 health care sites supported by ACONDA among which 4 are located in Abidjan and 1 in Dabou. These adolescents and their parents have individually consulted a physician. Consulting a physician aims to have parental consent for announcing the status and to get in touch with the adolescents to assess their knowledge about the disease and to monitor treatment compliance among those under antiretroviral therapy using a questionnaire. This questionnaire contains 03 sections: - structural barriers - Drug-related barriers - Psychological and social barriers A score was determined for each of 3 sections whose aggregate score classifies the evaluated person in 4 categories: - Score ≥ 20: Multiple impediments to adhesion: definite problem of adhesion - Score between 15 and 20: problem of adhesion - Score between 10 and 14: likely problem of adhesion - Score below 10: few obstacles found leading to the conclusion of a good adhesion The questionnaire is administered by the psychologist once a year for each patie

Results / Comments:
136 teenagers between 13 and 21 were seen from November 2011 to October 2012. 79 are aware of their disease (58%). 51 out of 79 teenagers were evaluated for compliance (65%). 41 out of 51 teenagers (80%) scored greater than 10, (likely adhesion problems). The psychosocial barrier appears to be the highest score.

Discussion:
Despite the announcement of their status, major compliance problems remain to be adressed among adolescents living with HIV. A specific requirement regarding therapeutic support and compliance monitoring need to be developed, as well as the psychological care of those adolescents.
