Aim:
The aim of the project was to test the feasibility of developing Mindfulness courses for HIV positive individuals referred for psychological intervention by health professionals from three London sexual Health Clinics. The key points of interest were: 1) to test the applicability of MBSR courses (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction) to our client population; 2) to identify factors which promote participants engagement with this approach; 3) develop a cost and treatment effective model of intervention which is in line with the NICE guidelines.

Method / Issue:
To date we have run three pilot MBSR courses compromising of twenty seven HIV positive male and female individuals with mixed presentations related to their HIV positive diagnosis including: recurrent depression; coping difficulties, moderate anxiety and depression, living with chronic pain. Outcome measures used included: 1) depression scale (PHQ9), 2) anxiety scale(GAD), 3) Mindfulness scale (CAMS-R), 4) Compassion scale (in the third MBSR course), 5) participants? testimonials.

Results / Comments:
Preliminary results from quantitative and qualitative data suggest that a great majority of participants found the course beneficial. Improvements were evident in: 1) patients feed back, 2) lower scores on anxiety and depression scales, 3) a positive trend for the compassionate and mindfulness scales. So far these results are consistent with the general findings in the research literature for the efficacy of the Mindfulness training and indicate that this is a fruitful area of development in the provision of mental health treatments for HIV positive patients. Key areas of interest for future work in this area will include: 2) Establishing an assessment protocol likely to promote patients? engagement with the Mindfulness approach. 2) How to deliver the courses in a way that is cost effective for the service.
