Aim:
The scale-up of antiretroviral therapy (ART) has reduced AIDS-related deaths substantially, resulting in persons living with HIV (PLHIV) living longer and healthier lives. To protect against unintended pregnancy, sexually active people with HIV infection need to be informed and have access to contraceptives. While PLHIV may be motivated to use contraception, to date no data are available on contraceptive use and method mix among PLHIV in China.

Method / Issue:
A cross-sectional survey of 2,987 PLHIV aged >18 years was conducted in 2012 in Guangxi Autonomous Region (Guangxi) which has the fastest-growing HIV epidemic in China.

Results / Comments:
Of the 2,987 respondents, 62.8% (n=1,876) were male, and 52.1% (n=1,551) reported having sexual intercourse in the last 6 months. The prevalence of contraceptive methods use was 96.7%. 86.8% of respondents used condoms, 2.0% oral contraception pills, 10.8% intrauterine device (IUD), 0.8% emergency contraception, 1.2% rhythm method, 3.7% withdrawal, 6.9% female sterilization, and 1.3% male sterilization. 14.3% (n=216) of participants reported using dual contraceptives (condom combined with another contraceptive method). The majority of participants (72.8%) reported that they used condoms more frequently than before after they knew their HIV positive status. Participants who were on ART were more likely to use condoms (p<0.01).

Discussion:
While condom use is high, 12.2% of PLHIV were using other contraceptive methods for the purpose of birth control. Further research is needed to explore reasons for contraceptive choices among PLHIV and comparison with PLHIV in other regions and with HIV negative populations in China.
