Aim:
To share the effectiveness of using an integrated HIV/SRHR and Sports model outreach as a mobilization and client retention strategy for young people in Iganga, Eastern Uganda.

Method / Issue:
Reproductive Health Uganda (RHU) a not for profit non government organization and an affiliated member of IPPF on realizing the need to extend HIV Counseling and Testing /Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (HCT/SRHR) services to the most vulnerable and hard to reach young people, It designed an intervention that focuses on using sports as a tool for mobilization and promoting client retention. Young people often exhibit characters of impatience while they access health services. This at times relates to the high numbers of clients that may have come for services at that service point, also them being unoccupied as they wait for service. Realizing the fact that this target group worldwide identify themselves with sports activities, RHU strategically designed integrated sports outreaches model to reach them. The model integrates sports, SRHR education and service provision. It focuses on creating a one stop center for HIV/SRHR services for young people while at the same time they are occupied as they wait to be served. The model pays attention to the quality of care especially promotion of privacy. Services provided include but not limited to HCT, Contraceptives/FP services, Condom and SRHR information. Sports activities include but not limited to football, Netball, volley ball and condom bash. The model highly puts young people at the pivot as they take lead in planning, coordinating and implementing the activities.

Results / Comments:
This intervention highly promotes of youth participation, utilization of local resources, promotion of community ownership of SRHR programs, creating a one stop center for integrated HCT/SRHR services, high client retention, boosted community based demand for HCT/SRHR services, increased numbers of young people served at an average of 300 young people reached in a one day sports outreach.

Discussion:
There is no single model that can be used to reach young people with HIV/SRHR services. Efforts should be therefore be made towards continuous development of innovative yet low-cost models and approaches that contribute to reaching more young people with SRHR information and services while not compromising quality of care. The integrated HIV/SRHR services and Sports model proves caters for increased access to quality HIV/SRHR services as well as entertainment and promotion of talent development.
