Aim:
The Marang Men’s Project was HIV biological and behavioural surveys (BBS) that used respondent driven sampling (RDS) to recruit men who have sex with men(MSM) in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg, South Africa. We measured estimates of “selling sex” to other men in the last 6 months and ever having been in prison.

Method / Issue:
The cross-sectional survey assessed HIV risk behaviours and dried blood spot DBS) specimens were collected as a biomarker test for the prevalence of HIV among MSM. In total, 925 MSM were found to be eligible for survey participation and were included in our analysis (i.e. Cape Town: N=286 Durban: N=290 Johannesburg: N=349). Crude and adjusted HIV and behavioural risk factor prevalence were estimated and weights that adjusted for personal network size and biases in recruitment were generated using RDSAT Version: 7.1.38.

Results / Comments:
HIV prevalence were high in each of the three study cities. We found high adjusted estimates for “selling sex” to other men among respondents in Cape Town and Johannesburg. Over half of the respondents (52.6%) in Cape Town, and nearly a quarter (23.1%) in Johannesburg reported that they had ‘sold sex to men’ in the last six months. Similarly the estimates of respondents who reported previous incarceration in the Marang Men’s Project in both Cape Town and Johannesburg were unusually high (67.8% and 42.6%) in each of the two study cities.

Discussion:
Social networks of MSM recruited in each of the two study cities were an over-representation of particular subcategories of MSM. MSM who were recruited from some social networks in both Cape Town and Johannesburg were overwhelmingly men who were previously incarcerated. Moreover, high rates of selling sex to men confirmed that the study sample in Cape Town was most probably drawn from a social network of sex workers. However the Marang Men’s Project reached a ‘hard-to-reach’ and invisible high risk group (i.e. previously incarcerated male sex workers). For this reason we are recommending an urgent call for more comprehensive service provision for key populations such as prison populations.
