| Aim: To find out the compliance pattern among AIDS patients on anti retroviral therapy(ART)and elicit the reasons for drop out. | ||||
| Method / Issue: A total of 1155(M=794,F=361)AIDS patients registered for ART from May 2005 to September 2006 were analyzed with reference to age,gender,domicile,stage of the disease(WHO)and possible reasons for dropout.The reasons for drop out were elicited through social workers and data was analyzed statistically. | ||||
| Results / Comments: Of the 1155 patients,234(M=131,F=53)discontinued medication and the compliance rate was 79.7%.compliance was significantly more among females.Patients from chennai were far more compliant than from other areas,and the ratio among them was 4:1.The compliance of the patients as per WHO stage I,II,III and IV disease were 90.3%,83.4%,80.1%,75.7% respectively. The drop out rate was more common in age group 40-49 years(23%).Many patients(48.7%)gave wrong address or migrated to other areas and could not be traced in the address furnished by them.Few others belonging to stage IV disease and terminally ill(14.1%)could not continue the medication.4% of the patients had financial problems and 6.2% had social stigma and fear of discrimination.26.9%stopped drugs due to side effects.The drop out rate was more during first 2 months of therapy(75.2%). | ||||
| Discussion: Compliance was satisfactory among females,those who had WHO stage I,II,III disease and those who were living in chennai city.All these indicates that proper registration and handing of cases to nearest ART centre of choice with improved social support system may help to improve the compliance pattern still more. | ||||
