Abstract #24  -  Efficacy of Internet-Based and Computer-based Kiosk HIV Interventions: The Youthnet Trials
Session:

Aim:
The primary study outcome for each trial was to increase condom use among those in the intervention; secondary outcomes were to increase positive condom attitudes, norms and self-efficacy for negotiation and use.

Method / Issue:
Randomized trials of an Internet-based and a clinic-based computer kiosk HIV prevention initiative for young adults, Youthnet. We recruited 2623 youth exclusively online and 1879 youth in clinic settings; after a brief 15 minute, interactive intervention or static control session, youth were asked to return to the site two additional times to complete follow-up behavioral assessments.

Results / Comments:
We were able to complete follow up 53% of the online sample and 48% of the clinic sample. This represents higher retention rates than has been seen for other online and computer-based HIV related interventions. While we observed no difference in condom use among those in the intervention compared to controls between baseline and follow up for the online sample, we did see a significant decrease in negative attitudes towards condoms when comparing intervention to controls over the study period. Analyses of data from the clinic-based sample are ongoing.

Discussion:
A brief online or computer-based intervention has the potential to reach substantially more individuals than conventional face-to-face interventions. If we can reach higher proportions of people and influence their attitudes online, we may be able to use the Internet and computer-kiosks adjunctively to support other clinic and community-based interventions.
