Aim:
Children are now living longer and healthier lives with HIV and those perinatally infected are living into adolescence and adulthood. In the UK there is a small but significant group of young people who are now teenagers and young adults. A review of the existing social science literature in this area has revealed little research about the experiences of these 'long term survivors'. The few studies that have examined the complex issues faced by these young people have relied primarily on clinical data. The advances in medical treatment have made a major difference to the life expectancy of these young people, but this may not be matched by their 'lived experience'. This review of the literature highlights the need for further research on the psycho-social effects of HIV to facilitate a greater understanding of how HIV affects this group.
