Aim:
1. to describe reproductive and sexual practices among HIV-positive couples in terms of gender and power relations 2. to understand interaction between fertility desire and perception of transmission risk among HIV-positive couples

Method / Issue:
This is a qualitative study that employs observation, indepth interview and FGD in collecting data in the two research sites, Jakarta and Karawang. FGD was undertaken to HIV-positive men and HIV-positive women separately, two FGDs for each group. Indepth interviews were done to 4 HIV-positive discordant couples and 1 HIV-positive concordant couple.

Results / Comments:
1. The condom use among HIV-positive couples is inconsistent due to perception of illness and knowledge of reproductive health 2. The primacy of fertility desire to having children is often putting aside the transmission risk among HIV-positive discordant couples 3. The desire to marry or remarry is strong for both HIV-positive men and women 4. HIV-positive men tend to face a dilemma in disclosing their status to their partners.

Discussion:
Illness perception, reproductive health knowledge and issue of disclosure are factors that influence sexual practices among HIV-positive couples. HIV-positive men and women perceive that having children is the utmost intention of the family though rather disregards sexual transmission risk. This phenomenon brings out the issue of reproductive rights between husbands and wives as individual in the context of gender relations in the family.
