Additional Authors:  Dr Joyce Hunter, Dr David Lounsbury, Dr Mabel Bianco,
Aim:
To present two models of global networks in the fight against AIDS, the International Women's AIDS Caucus and the HIV Action Research Network. Strengths, challenges, and lessons learned from these two types of networks will be addressed. Ethical issues for effective coalitions will also be presented.

Method / Issue:
Workshop: Presentation of the essential components and ethical issues of two network models. Workshop participants will then discuss the issues, including the strengths and challenges to be considered, including their own experiences that inform the process of successful network development.

Results / Comments:
Workshop participants will understand the range of issues inherent in successful network/coalition building. In addition to strengths and challenges to be addressed, three fundamental principles of network building emerge: 1. Problem definition, 2. The ethics of ensuring transparency and building trust, and 3. Challenge of creating change and building capacity.

Discussion:
Lessons Learned: As the HIV/AIDS epidemic continues to grow, we need effective networks in place. The nature of these challenges are made very clear when considering the immensity of HIV/AIDS around the globe. Community activists, public health providers and researchers acknowledge that our strategies in the fight against AIDS must be continually reexamined and that only by working collaboratively can we further reduce the burden of HIV/AIDS.
