Aim:
Objective of the study was to test the acceptability, validity and reliability of the Missoula-Vitas quality of life instrument (MVQOLI) patients with advanced AIDS disease.

Method / Issue:
This was a cross-sectional study. Validity of the MVQOLI was tested by having 200 terminally ill AIDS patients complete the slightly modified version of the MVQOLI (MVQOLI-M) and trained research assistants to give karnofsky performance scores for the patients. The content validity ratio approach was used for establishing face and content validity of the instrument. Convergent and discriminant validity were assessed using correlation analysis between MVQOLI-M and single global item and Karnofsky performance score respectively. Reliability was assessed using Cronbachs alpha and test-retest reliability using the intra-class correlation coefficient. Multiple regression analysis was used to determine how best to combine the subscales to predict overall well being.

Results / Comments:
The MVQOLI-M was acceptable to this population. The instrument also demonstrated good reliability (Cronbachs alpha =0.85 intraclass correlation coefficient=0.6). All the domains of overall well-being, physical symptom, function, psychological well-being and transcendence were relevant to this population. The Transcendence domain greatly contributes to the quality of life for people with advanced AIDS disease

Discussion:
The MVQOLI-M is an acceptable, valid and reliable measure of quality of life for people with advanced AIDS. Evidence form the MVQOLI-M suggests that inclusion of a measure of transcendence is important to make measurement of quality of life in advanced illness valid.
