ISSUES; Cotrimaxazole is often used for the treatment of infections; however it has a special use for people living with HIV/AIDS as a prophylaxis for opportunistic infections. When taken everyday it has been proven to prolong life, thus enabling people with HIV to live longer healthier lives. DESCRIPTION; Aware of the usefulness of Cotrimoxazole prophylaxis to people living with HIV/AIDS, The AIDS Support Organization (TASO) with Ministry of Health Uganda adopted its use in the bid to prevent malaria toxoplasmosis, diarrhoea and respiratory infections. Cotrimoxazole is supplied at the service centers and after clinical evaluation by a clinician to rule out allergies and discussion with the counselor concerning issues of adherence, it is given to eligible clients monthly taken orally daily in specific doses according to weight for both adults and children born to HIV positive mothers.

Results / Comments:
LESSONS LEARNT; There is a marked reduction of opportunistic infections hence reduced need for clinic visits and hospitalization thus improved productivity among clients. It has also been noted to have minor side effects. RECOMMENDATIONS; Cotrimoxazole should be made easy for clients to use by making smaller coated double strength tablets, ensure proper drug use by increased awareness through the service providers and the media and there should be a constant supply by Ministry of Health Uganda, especially at health center level to ensure continuity, easy access and maximum adherence.
