Abstract #63  -  Prevention of Stress in Families of HIV Infected Patients

Aim:
To educate HIV infected people and their families know how to manage stresses through care giver volunteer.

Results / Comments:
84 families were counselled and trained and 52 of them noticed that after two counselling sessions of patients and two group family sessions, psycological climate in the family had some positive changes.Anger and despair emotions have almost completely disappeared . Patients reported that families rendered great help and support to them and conflicts were solved easily.50 patients believed that they already learnt how to cope with stress, so they are not afraid of situations which provoke stresses. 109 members of families confirmed some changes in their attitude towards HIV/AIDS and problems of collaboration with HIV infected members.
 
Discussion:
HIV infected patients where very often stigmatised and this caused alot of fear and desperation in their own families because they were unable to cope with stress.To prevent stress in families with HIV patients it is necessary to provide trainings with patients first and to involve family care givers into that work.Study of stress management has positive influence upon some family members. Work with situations of that provide stress management work must be included into day to day psycologists dealing with HIV infected patients.
