Aim: to present and discuss the basics of the master "rural development and HIV/AIDS" and create awareness that rural development professionals have a contribution to make to the fight against HIV/AIDS

Method / Issue: Profesionals in Africa and Asia working in the field of rural development (within producer organisations, as agricultural extension workers, in the area of livestock, micro-finance) can and should contribute to foghting the epidemic without changing the core-business of their organisation. What can they do and what competencies do they need to be effective?

Results / Comments: rural development professionals can be working on:
-prevention by reducing susceptibility to HIV infection
-treatment, care and support
-mitigating the impact of HIV/AIDS
-applying the 'do no harm' principle

Discussion: building capacities of rural development workers to deal effectively with the HIV/AIDS epidemic is a first step but by far not enough. Their roles and contributions hould be recognized by other stake-holders. And the sector itself should acknowledge its importance and potentials. Although there are signs that the rural development sector starts reacting, the pace and scale need to be increased.
So that the sector can have its role within the promoted multi-sectoral approach
