Aim:
This paper examines the interface between policy and practice regarding mens involvement in sexual and reproductive health, with special emphasis on HIV prevention in Botswana. Indications from research and consultative fora are that male involvement efforts are encumbered with challenges. One key challenge is determining how mens involvement can be fostered within a female-centered reproductive health policy framework. A second relates to praxis the dynamics of government and civil society participation in mens involvement efforts.

Method / Issue:
The paper begins with an analysis of policy documents and the proceedings of consultative fora. In addition, I discuss some findings of a recent empirical study by myself and Maundeni entitled: Gender and HIV/AIDS: An Assessment of Male Risk and Male Sector Interventions n Botswana.

Results / Comments:
The findings of this qualitative study showed that male involvement interventions are hampered by the absence of a cohesive framework for male involvement.

Discussion:
The paper culminates with a discussion of factors that should be considered in drawing up a cohesive framework that is informed by research on male sexualities, drawn up with males rather than for males in Botswana.
