Aim:
The paper explores if pornography on campuses contributes towards safer sex, sexual pleasure and increased erotic autonomy.

Method / Issue:
Since 2010, the Africa Gender Institute funded Young Women?s Leadership (YWL) project, a feminist action research project among young women in four southern African campuses, including the University of Botswana (UB) To address lack of ?sex education?, YWL has become one site of open fora for ?finding our sexual voices?, ?finding our ?g? spot?, displays of sexual images and objects and also of ?sex talk?. Sex toys and open chats about self-pleasuring, the ?phona? ? pussy and not without the shy giggles, sex itself have been subject of the project?s expos, - the Shine Events. The project used body-mapping and feminist action research as tool kits for studying sexualities on the UB campus.

Results / Comments:
It became clear that there was huge sexual curiosity, little talk about sex, and hugely concerning, a silence around HIV and AIDS among young women on campus. In an environment where unwanted pregnancies, STIs including HIV and AIDS and gender-based violence are a big concern, sex then becomes a world of danger and intrigue, with many young women becoming its casualties.

Discussion:
Pornography has for many years been an underground scene at the University of Botswana and is slowly becoming mainstream. Soft pornography has now become normalised through condom use demonstrations in schools to teach adolescents safer sex. Campuses are increasingly sites for visual representation of erotic objects and images. Perhaps then pornography on campuses can contribute towards safer sex, sexual pleasure and increased erotic autonomy?
