Aim:
Previous studies conducted in other countries have suggested that women of reproductive age living with HIV are sexually active, have fertility desires and contraceptive needs. Limited data are available on reproductive health needs of women infected with HIV (PLHIV) in China.

Method / Issue:
A cross-sectional survey of 2,987 PLHIV aged =18 years was conducted in 2012 in Guangxi Autonomous Region (Guangxi) which has the fastest-growing HIV epidemic in China. Descriptive statistical analysis method was employed.

Results / Comments:
Mean age of the sample was 42.45 years (SD=12.83). Of the 2,987 participants, 37.2% (n=1,111) were women. Among these women, 81.0% (n=896) were of reproductive age (18-49 years). Among these women of reproductive age, 64.1% (n=574) were still sexually active and 96.7% (n=552) had a spouse or stable sexual partners. 69.8% (n=366) of these women’s husbands or stable partners were HIV positive. Of the 574 women who had sex in the past 6 months, 39.8% (n=227) wanted another child and 30.0% (n=171) had a pregnancy after their diagnosis of HIV infection. Among those women reporting sexual activity, 85.0% used condoms, 3.1% oral contraceptive pills, 11.3% intrauterine devices (IUD), 1.6% emergency contraception, 1.6% rhythm method, 5.7% withdraw, 6.8% female sterilization, and 0.6% male sterilization. Over 14.3% (n=215) used dual contraceptive methods (a condom combined with another method). Serodiscordant couples were more likely to have a child compared with serocordant couples (52.9% vs. 34.1%, p<0.01). Among women reporting post-diagnosis pregnancy, who got pregnancy, 57.8% had delivered their child while 34.7% had induced abortion, and 7.5% were still pregnant during the survey.

Discussion:
More than half (64.1%) of women who infected with HIV and who were at reproductive age were still sexually active and 39.8% of them still wanted to have a child. Reproductive health programs need to be integrated with HIV prevention and provide the specialized reproductive health services needed by women living with HIV and their partners. Further research is needed to understand barriers to reproductive services for these women and their partners and differences in needs for serodiscordant and sercordant couples.
