Aim:
Workshop (Option 3) of the Psychology of Ageing with HIV, co-facilitated by Dr Alexander Margetts, Clinical Psychologist, and Breda Patterson, Advanced HIV Practitioner

Method / Issue:
Around the world there is a growing population of ‘older’ adults living with HIV (both new diagnoses and ‘long term survivors’). As well as physical health (co)morbidities, a greater understanding is emerging of the unique psychological aspects of growing older with HIV.

Results / Comments:
This workshop will explore ways in which clinicians and services can support adults ageing with HIV by paying attention to the Psychological aspects of this process, with reference to the emerging qualitative and quantitative literature and evidence base. • We will briefly overview the current worldwide demographic data on older people living with HIV • We will explore the social construct of what is meant by ‘older people’ and ageing, and how this varies amongst different cultures. • We will consider the ‘double jeopardy’ of age and HIV related stigma, and the unique combined challenges this can pose for clients, with reference to mental health data • We will propose a progressive narrative framework for those clients wishing to reflect on their HIV life journey • We will recommend a Brief Solution Focused Therapy approach for those clients wishing to focus on the ‘here and now’ and build on their resilience and strengths. • We will encourage the sharing of experiences within the workshop, to facilitate a better understanding of working with this client group. • We will reflect on what service changes and adaptations may be necessary where delegates are to ensure optimal care and service provision for this client group

Discussion:
Workshop participants will gain: • Knowledge about the global growing population of older adults living with HIV • A clear understanding of what is meant by ageing and the influence society that has upon this • A psychosocial framework within which to formulate the unique difficulties that can arise from the combination of ageing and living with HIV • An introduction to two different therapeutic approaches that may assist those having psychological difficulty ageing with HIV • Create personalised key take-home messages to present to their colleagues/service/area of work on return from the workshop to enhance the psychological care of older adults living with HIV that they work with
