Aim: There is now compelling evidence that children who grow up orphaned by AIDS or in AIDS-affected families are at increased risk of contracting HIV in adolescence and youth. With tens of millions of children affected in sub-Saharan Africa alone, it is essential that we establish the causal mechanisms of risk, and establish effective and scaleable prevention tools. This talk will report findings of an evidence review commissioned by PEPFAR-USAID with Professor Lorraine Sherr, as well as recent findings from two longitudinal studies of 7000 adolescents and youth in South Africa. For many years, the field of HIV prevention and the field of orphans and vulnerable children have been working in parallel. Now is the time that they need to come together.
