  Aim:
The influence of gender inequities on HIV risk and the concomitant need for gender-specific, gender sensitive, and gender empowering HIV prevention approaches are undisputed. However, recent developments in HIV prevention, such as the debates surrounding ‘opt-out’ HIV testing, suggest that the exigencies of the on-going epidemic may be weakening the equity and human rights basis of prevention efforts. Evidence regarding a range of HIV prevention interventions – from gender neutral to gender empowering – is reviewed to assess the risks posed by a weakened commitment to human rights to the achievement of gender equity and HIV prevention goals.
