Abstract #3498  -  Effective buddy-project to support HIV-positive migrant women in the Netherlands: the Positive Sisters project

Aim:

The Positive Sisters (PS) project is a holistic buddy-project for HIV-positive migrant women living in the Netherlands. A ‘Positive Sister’ is a HIV-infected migrant woman trained to provide support to another HIV-infected migrant woman. The purpose of the PS project is to empower women to live with HIV in a positive way, contributing to the reduction of further transmission of HIV.

Method / Issue:

The main goals of evaluating the PS project were to document and analyse process of project implementation and changes that have occurred within lives of migrant women living with HIV after being connected to the PS project, as well as changes for other stakeholders, which was done using the Most Significant Change (MSC) technique.

Results / Comments:

The MSC technique is a participatory qualitative form of M&E based on collection, systematic selection, and analysis of stories of changes caused by an intervention. Stories were analysed together with all stakeholders. The study involved desk review, interviews and FGD and SWOT analysis.

Discussion:

Results • The PS project has improved the quality of life through improving acceptance of being HIV-positive having future perspectives increased self-confidence increased openness about HIV and increased empowerment of both the PS and the women • The holistic approach of PS project based on spirituality and inclusive to different beliefs/religions is highly valued and well-accepted. Conclusion The PS project is a successful HIV-buddy project. Through its focus on spirituality and live-skills, the project enables women to live their life with HIV positively, enabling them to prevent further transmission of HIV.
