Aim:

In 2014, Amsterdam faced 350 new HIV diagnoses in the two key affected populations, men who have sex with men and migrants. A significant proportion of these presented late to care. Therefore, in addition to the current preventive, diagnostic and treatment options, it is imperative to develop and implement innovative strategies that target all factors sustaining the epidemic. The HIV Transmission Elimination Amsterdam (H-TEAM) consortium, consisting of relevant stakeholders from public health, civil society, key affected communities, general practitioners and HIV-treating physicians in Amsterdam, designed a multidisciplinary and integrative approach. I will describe the gaps in the Amsterdam cascade of care and how the H-TEAM strategies tackle these gaps in five synergistic work packages. The H-TEAM initiative aims to optimize and expand the implementation of treatment as prevention strategies, increase testing and awareness for HIV infection and examine how to integrate pre-exposure prophylaxis into existing standard prevention strategies.
