Abstract #41  -  Utilization of adolescent/youth friendly health services: a Chibombo district experience

To increase the utilization of adolescent/youth friendly services among young people in Chibombo District by 50% by the end of 2011
 
  Method / Issue:
Low utilization of the provision of sexual and reproductive health (srh) services in the public health delivery system(health Centres) by Adolescents/ youths in Chibombo District Methods 1) Capacity building trainings to the Adolescents/ youths, NHC's, parents and Nurses in Youth Friendly Health Services Management,HIV/AIDS/STI's, Reproductive Health, Counselling and Psycho- social Life skills. 2)Sensitization awareness programmes on the availability of Adolescent/youth friendly health services in all health centres in Lusaka District, through a combination of mass media - participatory adolescent youth centred approaches(interventions)
 
  Results / Comments:
Gigantic increase inthe number of Adolescents/ youths accessing the following in Lusaka district. - HIV/AIDS information - STI information and Treatment - Family Planing services - Ante- natal services - Post - natal srevices - Voluntary Counselling and testing (VCT) - Anti- retroviral Therapy (ART) - TB Treatment Leading to enhanced safer sex life styles and positive behaviour formation and change among the adolescents/ youths in Chibombo District.
 
  Discussion:
j) Conclusions Youth Friendly Health Services initiative is an effective and efficient strtegy of meeting Adolescents/ youths' sexual and reproductive health needs, regardless of their religion, social status or race.
